LOCAL 909, U.A.W. OFFICIAL NOTICE
April 25, 2008
As was reported on early Friday, April 18, 2008 U.A.W.- G.M.
Vice President Cal Rapson, authorized an extension to the 5-day strike letter as
a result of progress that had been made. He further emphasized that should talks
stall, or become unsatisfactory, then he would invoke a 12 hour notice. We are
pleased to report that progress is still being made, although there are several
big issues that need resolution. Should there be any change in status, you will
be promptly notified. Once again, thanks for your continued support.
Lay-off Notification:
According to Management, the 6-speed operations are
expected to be laid off effective no later than the end of the 2nd shift today,
Friday, April 25, 2008. Those of you being impacted are being asked by your
Union leadership to apply for unemployment compensation per the supplied UIA
information. Management indicated they will challenge all UIA claims associated
with this situation as well as SUB pay. The International Union will challenge
Management’s position.
Please be advised that because this lay-off is being driven
by a strike at another GM location, that health care benefits for those who are
laid off from the 6-speed will expire on May 1, 2008. Please reschedule any
unnecessary doctor appointments as you will be responsible for medical bills
during this period of lay-off.
And, again, be sure to make application for Unemployment
Benefits by phone or on the Internet, per the instructions that will be handed
out to 6-speed employees.
As far as 4-speed operations are concerned, Management
indicated it will continue to run for a period of time yet to be determined.
They did note, however, that 4-speed operations will most likely run for
approximately 7 to 8 days. Specifically what conditions may exist at that time
may determine the manner in which the 4-speed operations are released, as it
relates to lay-off provisions, unemployment, and SUB pay.
The 6-speed will be impacted as follows:
Production Employees: All will be impacted on all shifts. This
will include Team Leaders, Team Members, Quality, Checker Receiving.
Material Employees: Inverse seniority due to plant-wide equalization groups,
i.e. Drivers, D-5’s.
Sanitation Employees: Inverse seniority due to plant-wide equalization groups,
i.e. Sweepers, Chippers, etc.
Skilled Trades: Permanent lay-off provisions (high seniority will be retained
by classification)
Should this lay-off continue beyond 2 weeks, then the
permanent lay-off provisions may be implemented for all employees
– which would result in 4-speed and 6-speed employees having their plant
seniority combined. This may not occur, however, should the 4-speed operation
cease production prior to 2 weeks which Management indicated they expect to
happen.
Bear in mind, all is subject to change as the circumstances
may very from what’s currently anticipated.
Many of you are asking how long this lay-off will continue
for. Obviously, we are unable to say specifically how long that may be. Should
you want any information or updates (if available), please call the UAW Local
909 Union Hall at (586) 759-4320.
Those of you planning to accept the Special Attrition Program
(SAP), please contact the Hourly Benefits Office as this offer is still
available.

Monday, April 28th is Worker's Memorial Day, a day set
aside to honor those that died in the work place. We take this time to
remember all who died in the workplace, especially the following 909 members;
Albert Monette,Donald Auch,
Donald Faulkner, Barry Compeau,
Richard Blanks and Marcel Chagnon

As we wrote after Brother Chagnon's death in 2004 -
Brother Chagnon's death
also serves as a wake up call for all of us. No one comes here to die
and we are sure that there is no one in the Union or Management that
wants to see that happen. UAW and GM have developed some of the most
stringent health and safety rules and programs in the industrial sector.
However, we all have responsibilities for our safety. Management has an
obligation to provide as safe a workplace as possible and they must
address safety issues in an expedient manner.
The Local Union has a
responsibility to make sure that Management follows their contractual
and legal obligations that protect our members.
But as workers, we have
an even greater responsibility to ourselves and our families to follow
the safety procedures and wear the proper protective clothing. No one
can make you perform an unsafe act or tell you not to wear the proper
equipment. Only you can do that.
We remind you that you are obligated to
follow the safety policies and wear your personal protective equipment.
In light of that has happened, we. Union and Management, rededicate
ourselves to support the joint health and safety policies and practices.
Please, .please, please, be safe out there. |
