909 History

In 1961 Chevrolet Warren opened with approximately 200 maintenance workers and 62 production workers coming from Chevrolet Gear and Axle. These workers were members of UAW local 235.
1962, a petition was started to charter their own local. Local 235 opposed the new local being chartered and the case was taken to the National Labor Relation Board. In 1962 a petition was started to charter their own local.
In 1963, the 1000 people employed by Chevrolet Warren voted to form their own Local Union. The vote was supported by 900 people in favor and 35 against. The charter was approved by then International President Walter P. Reuther. The first President of Local 909 was Daniel T. Bush, a mill-wright and father of present Shop Chairman Terry Bush. The first shop Chairman was Bill Baker, a Maintenance Welder however he did not serve a full term and was replaced by John Davis. Elections for officers was every 2 years, up until 1975 where elections went to every 3 years.
In 1964 a home was purchased for Local 909, a "house" at 24249 Mound Road, for $20,000.
Our Retiree Chapter was chartered November 1, 1966 with a small membership.
Our first in-plant election was in 1972 under President Lou Warren, father of former Committeeman Frank Warren. The election was held in the cafeteria and was considered a major event, being the first of its kind in the entire Chevrolet Division. Many of our officers were elected numerous times.
In 1973 an official hall was built on Mound Rd. across from the plant
In 1993 the present hall at 5587 Stephens was built.
Local 909 has had 2 strikes in its history. One in the 1970's that lasted 69 days and one in 1997 lasted a few days.
Notable Mention: Carl Eden served 7 times as Shop Chairman, making his the longest serving Chairman in the Local's history. Leonard B. Stephens served 8 terms as Recording Secretary and was elected the first black President of Local 909 Frank Hammer is the only officer to have served as Chairman 2 terms and President 1 term. Daniel T. Bush served as President, skilled trades committeeman and as Financial Secretary. Wally Lanczynski was moved up from Vice President to President twice, after Presidents Lou Warren and Darrel Newberry went on staff for the International Union. Cass Salerno served 5 terms as our Financial Secretary. Darrel Newberry served 3 terms as Vice President and 2 terms as President. Diana Hubert and Marion Portis were the first 2 women trustees. Lenore Trombley has served as our office secretary since 1967. Alan Benchich served as Recording Secretary for 1 term. Vice President for 1 term and is currently our President. Brenda Anerson was the first female Alternate Committeeperson, followed by Charlotte Eatmon and Ruth Ann Hughes. Felicia Grant was the first female Committeeperson Jackie Kelly was (and still is ) the first female Recording Secretary.
